An Evaluation of a Diverse Database Teaching Curriculum and the Impact of Research

The School of Computing and Technology at the University of Sunderland teaches a diverse range of programmes to a disparate range of students. This paper will outline and evaluate the specific subjects taught in each module at each level, the applications and methodologies used, and the relationship between modules at different levels. It will also discuss the various assessment methodologies employed across the modules. There is a growing database research culture within the school, with the formation of the Database Applications and Theory Research group. Research in this group has a positive effect on the subjects taught within the database modules in the school, and this paper will examine how this research culture is integrated, both in the teaching and in the active learning of students
